Crane Mechanic
Service Mechanic - specifically mobile crane units
Responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing cranes and other heavy lifting equipment. The job requirements typically combine technical knowledge, physical ability, and safety awareness.
Typical Job Duties
- Inspect & test cranes regularly for wear, damage, or malfunction
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical problems
- Repair or replace faulty parts
- Perform preventive maintenance
- Keep maintenance logs and reports
- Ensure cranes meet safety regulations
Requirements
Education & Training
- High school diploma or GED (minimum)
- Technical school or vocational training in diesel mechanics, hydraulics, or heavy equipment repair is preferred
- Apprenticeships or on-the-job training are offered through Local 139 (see link)
Technical Skills
- Basic understanding of:
- Hydraulic systems
- Electrical systems and wiring
- Diesel engines
- Mechanical components (gears, brakes, hoists)
- Ability to read and inturrpt schematics and operator's / service manuals
- Familiarity with diagnostic tools
Certifications (preferred)
- OSHA/MSHA safety training (provided through Local 139 apprenticeship)
- NCCCO certification from National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators
- CDL (Commercial Driver’s License)
Work Experience
- Experience with heavy equipment (cranes, forklifts, construction machinery)
- Previous service/repair experience in automotive or heavy equipment shop
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift heavy parts
- Comfortable working at heights and outdoors in various weather conditions
Additional Skills
- Problem-solving and troubleshooting
- Attention to detail, reporting & documenting service work
- Communication skills
Work Environment
- Mainly in shop service but may include construction sites, industrial facilities, or equipment yards
- May involve travel to job sites
- May involve overtime or emergency repairs (after hours/weekends)
