Hydro-Excavation Operator - Nationwide

The Hydro‑Excavation Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of hydrovac trucks, vacuum trucks, and other commercial vehicles requiring a CDL. This position performs non‑destructive excavation, daylighting, trenching, and debris removal for industrial, commercial, and municipal clients. The Operator must maintain a strong safety mindset, demonstrate mechanical aptitude, and work effectively in varying jobsite and weather conditions. As a non‑exempt role, this position is eligible for overtime pay in accordance with federal and state wage and hour laws.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Operate hydrovac and vacuum trucks to perform hydro‑excavation, potholing, trenching, and debris extraction. 
  • Drive and maneuver commercial vehicles in compliance with DOT regulations and company safety standards. 
  • Conduct pre‑trip, en‑route, and post‑trip inspections of trucks and equipment. 
  • Set up and break down jobsite equipment, hoses, wands, cones, and safety barriers. 
  • Safely operate high‑pressure water systems and vacuum systems. 
  • Follow utility locate markings, excavation plans, and jobsite instructions with accuracy. 
  • Communicate effectively with crew members, supervisors, and clients. 
  • Maintain clean, organized, and serviceable equipment at all times. 
  • Complete required paperwork, logs, and digital reporting for each job. 
  • Assist with general labor tasks including shoveling, debris handling, and site cleanup. 
  • Adhere to all OSHA, DOT, and company safety policies and procedures.  

Requirements

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to enter and exit heavy equipment and commercial vehicles multiple times per day. 
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull 50–75 lbs routinely. 
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work in confined or uneven areas. 
  • Ability to perform load‑bearing tasks required for safe operation of hydrovac equipment. 
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow. 

Qualifications 

  • Valid CDL (Class A or B) is preferred. 
  • Acceptable driving record required. 
  • Prior hydrovac or vacuum truck experience preferred; training available for qualified CDL operators. 
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations and safe driving practices. 
  • Ability to interpret utility locate markings and jobsite instructions. 
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot minor equipment issues. 
  • Commitment to safety, teamwork, and high‑quality service. 

Work Environment 

  • Field‑based role with exposure to construction sites, industrial facilities, and outdoor environments. 
  • Work may include extended hours, weekends, and travel across the lower 48 states depending on project needs.
