License and Permit Specialist
Bring your customer service experience to a $20-per-hour weekday role serving Waco and surrounding McLennan County communities. This opportunity is especially well suited to shift leads, bank tellers, medical receptionists, patient-access staff, school or college office assistants, hotel employees, utility representatives, and retail service specialists from Bellmead, Lacy Lakeview, Elm Mott, north and east Waco, and nearby I-35 corridor communities who are ready to turn their public-facing experience into a public-service career.
The role offers paid training, a Monday-through-Friday schedule, weekly pay, and a credible opportunity to build state experience. Employees who successfully convert to permanent state employment receive generous state benefits under applicable eligibility rules, strengthening the total long-term value of the role.
You will take on responsibility for document review, testing, payments, and decisions that affect Texas residents while learning a detailed, rules-based process. Who you will be working with
You will join a regional public-service office serving Waco and surrounding McLennan County communities. Team members handle detailed transactions from start to finish and must switch confidently between customer education, computer work, testing, and quality checks. The work suits someone who wants structure, responsibility, and a long-term professional direction.
Major Duties
• Engages with the public in a professional and courteous manner and explains driver-license requirements, traffic laws, safety regulations, and related topics.
• Screens applicants, reviews supporting documents, administers required tests, processes applications, and follows applicable policies and statutes.
• Communicates with internal and external stakeholders to review and approve license applications.
• Enters application data, payments, and technical details accurately into computer systems.
• Advises applicants about suspensions, cancellations, and qualifications for reinstatement.
• Uses computer systems and imaging equipment to capture applicant information and photographs.
• Inspects vehicles for safety before road tests, checks registration and compliance, and explains road-test procedures.
• Rides with applicants to administer road tests and evaluates driving performance and physical capability as required.
• Conducts required examinations, makes pass or fail determinations, and recommends corrective actions for driver improvement.
• Meets established accuracy, quality, and daily processing expectations.
What are we looking for
• Two years of customer-service experience in an onsite, customer-facing environment.
• Graduation from a two-year college is preferred.
• Relevant experience and education may substitute for one another.
• A valid Texas-issued driver license and clean driving record are required because employees administer road tests in applicant vehicles.
• Ability to learn and apply detailed laws, policies, procedures, and document requirements.
• Ability to remain professional when customers are frustrated, disagree with a decision, or must return with additional documentation.
• Ability to work onsite, maintain daily productivity standards, and complete a highly regimented training program.
• Willingness to wear an agency-issued body camera throughout the workday as part of the required uniform.
About the Opportunity
• Rate: $20.00/hr.
• Engagement: Approximately 6 months, temporary to hire.
• Days and hours: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Location: Waco, TX 76705 (East Crest Drive corridor near I-35)
• Conversion to permanent state employment is not guaranteed and depends on successful performance, completion of all required hiring steps, and the agency's staffing needs.
• Employees who later convert to permanent state employment may become eligible for state benefits under the state's applicable plans and rules.
